Precisely. There's a tremendous amount of difference between having responsibility and being the driving force behind something. When it comes down to it, if you can't aptly steer the ship (for whatever reasons, be they ineptitude or foggy reasoning due to an inflated sense of power), you shouldn't be captain.

Excellent insights. I think that we don't delineate between thing like taking ownership or taking initiative and leadership. They are different things. Also, taking the lead all of the time doesn't always allow for a broader picture or emotional detachment needed to avoid risks. Lots to chew on here.

For my personal blog, I hired a graphics artist to come up with a suite of products that included a matching twitter background. It was maybe $5 of the package. Once people follow me, I don't think they look at my twitter page ever again. I monitor twitter through the twitter website during the day because I'm also constantly monitoring email, reader, and CNN, so I see my twitter background then. However, at all other times, I'm catching up on my phone app. That said, I think it should look nice just in case, but isn't worth making a major investment (time and/or money).

That's essentially the reason I started taking this approach. I realized that I was killing myself thinking about how I was going to write rather than just letting the ideas flow out of me. A five page non-research paper would take me all day because I was over-crafting every sentence as I was writing. Given the same kind of assignment now, and I would probably brainstorm for 30 minutes and then write the whole thing in a couple of hours. Then it's back to tighten things up and maybe flesh other parts out. Less stress, more spontaneous creativity, better writing.
